SPENCER is a affectionately known as THE HUB OF THE UNIVERSE, being the next township after Brooklyn, as you travel up river, that can be reached by both boat & car. It is a wonderful sleepy hollow with Spencer General Store ( 02 4377 1123 ) as the centre, opposite the wharf.
It is here that people converge to pick up the weekend papers, grab a coffee, enjoy a late breakfast, or sit under the tree at the "Dunkirk Hotel" with a cold drink & catch up on the local news.
Spencer is approximately 2 hours drive from Sydney except in peak hour traffic via the F3 Freeway. It is recommended returning to Sydney via the inland route39 passing Wisemans Ferry & Dural to take advantage of the roadside fruit & vegetable stalls before returning home. Alternatively there are three options by car to continue on to the Hunter Valley, as well as several touring options to reach the Blue Mountains.
If staying in the area , townships such as St Albans & Wisemans Ferry are highly recommended as day trip destinations. The Settlers' Arms is a historic sandstone hotel on the road between Spencer & Broke in the Hunter Valley. Lunch is available at the Settlers Arms ( 4568 2111 ), 7 days a week, with a menu that changes weekly to keep the locals coming back .
Mangrove Mountain boasts a golf club with bistro lunch which can be combined with a drive to Peats Ridge or Kulnura.
Horseriding & Bushwalking- Glenworth Valley is approximately 45 minutes away & offers free range horseriding in this beautiful valley. Bush walks in Dharug National Park are easily accessed from the wiseman's ferry road, with well marked trails. The convict built original road north from Sydney remains in virtually mint original condition from the point it crosses Wisemans Fery and is certainly worth a visit while in the area.
Spencer Markets are also held on each Sunday of a long weekend.
